Turtkul district is a district in the Republic of Karakalpakstan. Established on July 3, 1927. It borders with the Ellikkala region in the west, the Khorezm region in the southwest, and the Navoi and Bukhara regions in the east. Its area is 7.5 thousand km2. Population - 161.2 thousand people (2004). In the region there are 1 city (Turtkul), 14 rural (ovul) citizens' gatherings - A. Durdyev, Zhambaskala, Kaltaminor, Kokcha, Otauba, Okhunboboev, Akboshli, Okkamysh, Pakhtachi, Tozabogyop, Ullubog, Chubukli, Shorahan, Kumboskan. The center is the city of Turtkul. The area is located within the Turan Lowland. The natural border of the region is the Amu Darya, along the banks of which stretches a strip of agricultural land and the main settlements of the region are concentrated. Most of it is covered by the sands of Kyzylkum, where there are salt marshes and salt lakes. The climate is strictly continental. The average January temperature is -4.9°, the minimum temperature is -28°, -35°, average July temperature 28.2°, maximum temperature 44°. The population is mainly Uzbeks (62%), Turkmens (23.8%), Kazakhs (9%), Karakalpaks (5.5 %), as well as representatives of Russian, Tatar, Ukrainian and other nationalities.
