Amudarya district is located in the south-east of the Republic of Karakalpakstan, in the middle reaches of the Amudarya River. Located on the left bank of the Amu Darya River, the district is connected to the right-bank territory through pontoon bridges in the settlements of Kipchak and Jumurtau. The district borders with Gubatagh district of Dashoguz vilayat of the Republic of Turkmenistan in the south-west, with Gurlensky district of Khorezm province in the east, and with Beruni and Karauziak districts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan in the north-east. Amudarya district got its name from the famous river artery. It includes the town of Mangit, which serves as the district centre, 4 urban settlements and 15 rural districts. In the vicinity of Dzhumurtau settlement, which got its name from the name of the nearby mountain, stone is mined and used for the construction of objects of various purposes. Jumurtau received its present status in 1968. Its territory stretches along the river coast.
